The site has archaeological evidence of human habitation dating back to the Stone Age, according to RWE.
Located on a plateau near the Moselle River, about 50km southwest of Koblenz, the Kail wind farm consists of three turbines with a total installed capacity of 12.9 megawatts. This capacity is sufficient to supply approximately 7,500 households with renewable electricity each year.
RWE stated that the construction process emphasized environmental sustainability and resource efficiency. Materials from access roads and crane platforms were reused to minimize waste and environmental impact. The company also noted that the site required special planning, as archaeological findings in the area indicated evidence of human habitation dating back to the Stone Age.
Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe and Australia, said: “Thank you very much to the companies involved, the local authorities, the district of Cochem-Zell and the farmers who made their land available, as well as the dedicated RWE team. Their excellent cooperation enabled us to complete our first wind farm in the Rhineland-Palatinate region quickly. This approach not only supports our commitment to the expansion of renewables but also creates significant added value for the region. For every kilowatt hour of energy generated, we contribute 0.2 cents to the neighbouring communities. They can expect an annual income of up to €60,000.”
The company highlighted that its investment in onshore wind power supports Germany’s broader transition toward renewable energy and contributes to achieving national energy goals. RWE is expanding its renewable portfolio with additional wind farm projects under development across the country, targeting a combined new capacity of 150 megawatts to supplement the 737 megawatts already in operation.
Beyond Germany, RWE continues to advance its offshore wind projects. The company recently completed the installation of all 72 monopile foundations at the 1.1-gigawatt Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea, one of the largest projects of its kind in Europe.
The completion of the Kail wind farm demonstrates RWE’s commitment to sustainable energy development and regional collaboration.
